Driving across Europe can feel like a completely different experience compared to driving in the UK. It’s no secret that many drivers are fed up with the state of British roads, especially concerning potholes. New research from the motor trade has revealed that most drivers who have travelled across Europe prefer the smoother, better-maintained roads on the mainland to home.

According to a recent survey, just over 60% of UK motorists believe that local roads in Europe are in better condition with fewer potholes than those in the UK. In contrast, less than 20% of drivers think UK roads are in better shape. This dissatisfaction isn’t limited to local roads; more than half of drivers also say Europe’s motorways have fewer and less severe potholes than UK motorways.

The survey also asked private and motor trade drivers to compare key aspects of road quality between the UK and Europe, and the UK came out on top in just one: road signs. When it comes to road markings, like those at junctions, drivers felt they were easier to see on European roads, with only 21% saying they thought markings were clearer in the UK.

Roadside litter is another area where Europe seems to shine. A third of drivers reported seeing less litter along European roads.

Motorway-equivalent roads in Europe have a different texture than the UK, making for a smoother ride and a reduction in noise. In some countries, particularly in accident-prone areas or faster sections of single-carriageways, barriers run down the middle of the road. These barriers likely prevent head-on collisions and must significantly reduce serious accidents, something we could benefit from on more of the UK’s riskier A-roads.

Peak-Time HGV Overtaking Bans.

In many European countries, heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) are banned from overtaking during peak hours.

There are adaptive speed limits for caravans and HGVs in areas with strong crosswinds or steep descents. There are also variable speed limits for all vehicles in wet weather conditions, something that could make UK roads much safer, especially during our frequent downpours. A good idea that may even reduce the cost of a private or motor trade insurance policy.

Fuel Pricing.

Motorways signage shows the fuel prices at upcoming service stations. A simple yet effective way to help drivers make informed decisions.

Fewer Speed Bumps.

Fewer speed bumps can make for a more pleasant driving experience without compromising on safety, it could also save a trip to the local tyre dealer or motor mechanic for vehicle repairs.

Are Drivers More Courteous?

Many believe drivers are far less aggressive in Europe, not as much jostling for position or road rage that you can sometimes see in a UK rush hour.

Are European roads better?

With all that being said, driving anywhere new can be a refreshing change from the daily grind of life on our UK roads. The smoother surfaces, enhanced safety features, and calmer driving cultures can make for a far more enjoyable road trip. We can always learn from our European neighbours, but they can probably learn a thing or two from the UK also.
