As property insurance costs continue to rise, homeowners and insurers alike are facing new challenges. While hurricanes and wildfires often dominate discussions around natural disasters, severe convective storms (SCS) remain an underappreciated but significant contributor to insured losses. The 2025 CoreLogic® Severe Convective Storm Risk Report provides critical insights into the frequency, severity, geography and future risks of SCS across the U.S., helping insurers better prepare for the evolving threat landscape.

Insights from the Impact of Severe Convective Storms in 2024

The report provides a comprehensive overview of the impact of severe convective storms in 2024. Unlike hurricanes or earthquakes, SCS events occur frequently—sometimes daily—across various regions. These storms include damaging hail, straight-line winds and tornadoes, causing billions in insured losses each year. The cumulative effect of frequent, smaller-scale events makes SCS a major driver of claims.

In 2024 alone, CoreLogic Weather Forensics estimated that hail with a diameter of two inches or greater fell on over 567,000 homes across the U.S., with a combined reconstruction cost value (RCV) of $160 billion.

Texas had the most significant impact, with over 180,000 homes affected. Approximately 72% of the homes with damaging hail impact were in Texas, Nebraska, Missouri, Oklahoma and Kansas.

The number of large hail days in 2024 was higher than the 20-year average, and there was a notable increase in “outbreak-type” severe weather days—intense but concentrated events—rather than prolonged stretches of severe weather. For example, the most impactful single hail event of 2024 occurred on Sep. 24 in Oklahoma City, where damaging hail fell on 35,000 homes. These concentrated, high-severity events can lead to rapid claims surges, overwhelming processing systems and resources.

The Severe Convective Storm Risk Landscape for 2025

The 2025 CoreLogic® Severe Convective Storm Risk Report also offers a detailed look at the number of and total RCV of homes at risk to hailstorms, tornado winds and straight-line winds at the metro and state levels. At the state level, Texas leads all states in hail, tornado and straight-line wind risk concentration due to its size, geographic position relative to SCS activity and numerous large concentrations of homes. At the metropolitan level, Chicago, IL leads in hail, tornado and straight-line wind risk.

CoreLogic estimated that:

over 41 million homes are at moderate or greater risk to hail of one inch or more with an RCV of $13.4 trillion
over 66 million homes are at moderate or greater risk to EF0 or stronger tornadoes with an RCV exceeding $21 trillion
over 53 million homes are at moderate or greater risk to winds of 65 mph or more with an RCV of $18.6 trillion

Future Climate Trends and the Need for Resilience

The 2025 CoreLogic® Severe Convective Storm Risk Report also provides an analysis of how changing weather patterns may intensify and shift the geography of severe convective storm risks across the U.S. CoreLogic’s Climate Risk Analytics (CRA) suite projects that in the next 5 to 25 years, regions of the U.S., particularly the Midwest and South, may face even greater threats from large hail, powerful winds and tornadoes.
