I have UPMC insurance that I purchased myself from the marketplace (PA) and pay for monthly. I went to MedExpress in Nov 2024 for swollen and sore tonsils. The lady at the front desk took my insurance card to check that I was in network. She looked up my insurance information, confirmed I was in network, and charged me my copay. She even made a comment about how UPMC is buying out MedExpress so I’m lucky to have UPMC insurance. I proceeded with the visit where they misdiagnosed me with a viral infection after a negative rapid strep test and never sent out my throat swab for formal strep testing. Fast forward to Dec 2024, my tonsils have not improved as the doctor said they would in 2 weeks so I went back after 3 (busy with work and the holidays). Again I present my insurance card, was told I am in network, and was charged my copay. There also was no comment about my last visit being denied for being out of network. I proceeded with the visit where they unnecessarily tested me for mono even though I was certain it wasn’t that based on past experiences, and they again did a rapid for strep. This time at least they sent out the swab so it did come back positive, and I was prescribed antibiotics and actually got better. Then I was informed it wasn’t all out of network and denied to the tune of around $800. I appealed with UPMC, stating that I wouldn’t have proceeded with the visit had I known it was out of network, and they denied the appeal saying I should have called them. Then I asked for a 3rd party review, which they denied because it apparently didn’t meet the proper criteria for one. Then I reached out to the no surprises network in PA and filed a claim, and after a review, they recommended that I file a claim to the insurance board of PA. So I did and ultimately that was denied. I feel I’ve run out of options, but I wanted to check in to see if there’s anything else I can do first. Any ideas? Also I did ask for an itemized invoice for both dates of service, and so far I only received one for the December date of service which actually didn’t detail any of the services and added up to more than the original bill (if actually only for the December date of service), so that’s also concerning. I asked for an invoice that actually lists out the services and cost for each date of service again and am pending to receive that.
