Request for Thoughts on Insurance Confusion.

This is on Behalf of a Family Member who doesn’t have Reddit

The family member enrolled in the Health Insurance Marketplace for 2025. Recently, their dependent landed an internship that will last around 10 weeks, and their employer offers interns health coverage.

If someone in the family obtained eligible health coverage through their employer, the family member’s understanding is that the individual needs to drop their Marketplace coverage. However, if the dependent drops Marketplace coverage for employer-based coverage and is only there for 10 weeks as contractually mentioned in their offer letter, then enrolling in employer-based coverage is pointless, right? Especially when the dependent needs to enroll back into Marketplace coverage right after the internship is over.

The family member called the Health Insurance Marketplace for an answer. Since the dependent is under 26, the family member assumes that the dependent can turn down employer-based coverage (as according to “People Under 30” – https://www.healthcare.gov/young-adults/children-under-26/). When the family member referred this resource to the representative, the response that external circumstances matter confused the family member a lot more and the family member should update their application.

The family member would like some outside perspective. Thank you!

Edit: The state is Texas and dependent is under 26
