Internal payroll mistake, now falling on me.. need advice.

Im gonna try to make this a long story short, maybe someone out there has had a similar situation come up, okay here I go. So I got married 2/24/24 and my wife had recently left her job so I put her on my health insurance shortly after our wedding. So the insurance company needed to date it back to the day we got married so they took a little extra out of my check to make up for that time for a few weeks. That part went smoothly, but after those few weeks, unbeknownst to me the person in charge of payroll/insurance never rolled it over in the system to deduct my wife’s portion of health insurance from my check and the company was paying for her portion for almost 7 months and would have gone longer if we didnt change insurance companies and essentially I now owe my company $3500 dollars and my boss is demanding I pay him back, I feel like this is not my problem due to this being an internal issue, and I think I’m being more than fair when i said I’ll pay if you meet me half way. $3500 is a lot of money for me being and this wasn’t my F’up.

What would you do, sorry to ramble on and I hope this makes sense.

Edit: I’m 29 years old I make $24/hr and I do electrical work in South west Florida
