I gave an old insurance card and now being billed full amount

Hi all,

I am very unfamiliar with the insurance system here in the States and rarely use my plan, so I am lost regarding a situation. Last month, I visited an in-network urgent care and got a bill today requesting the full amount because my insurance (BCBS) denied payment. I was confused since I found the clinic through Florida Blue’s website and made sure my plan was covered.

I logged into my account and checked the claim status on both my current plan and an inactive plan from 2023… then I realized that I must have presented my old insurance card that contains a different ID #, because the claim is under the inactive account and of course shows as denied. It’s strange that the front desk lady accepted my old insurance card and didn’t “warn me” that I’ll have to pay out of pocket like all the other clinics do. (Don’t they always check in the system?)

What should I do? Should I call the urgent care customer service and provide my current active plan ID #? Will they even update it after the bill is issued? Or should I call my insurance instead?

Any advice and direction would be much appreciated.
