Markel has announced its appointment of Jim Hinchley (pictured above) as chief retail officer for its specialty division, effective immediately.

In this role, Hinchley will lead Markel’s retail strategy, focusing on driving growth in existing business and exploring new opportunities within the retail channel.

Hinchley brings over 25 years of experience in the insurance industry, including leadership roles in underwriting, distribution, claims, and operations.

Prior to joining Markel, he served as president of insurance at Fairmatic, where he oversaw insurance functions for the commercial auto insurtech MGA. His past roles also include leadership positions at Farmers and Liberty Mutual.

Hinchley will report to Alex Martin, president of Markel Specialty, and will be based in Markel’s Boston office.

“We are excited to welcome Jim to Markel to oversee the strategic direction of our retail business,” Martin said. “Jim’s broad-ranging experience and deep expertise fully equip him to address the unique needs of our customers and partners within the retail space.”

Earlier this month, Markel also appointed Stacey Hinton as senior underwriter and head of jewelers block within the specie team with immediate effect. As jewelers block head, Hinton will oversee the growth and profitability of Markel’s international jewelers block portfolio.

Hinton’s responsibilities will include building and sustaining relationships with brokers and clients, as well as collaborating closely with the broader specie team and other divisions to implement the company’s jewelers block underwriting strategy.

Also this month, the firm announced three key hires aimed at expanding its international casualty portfolio and bolstering its wholesale claims service for brokers.

Lauren Percival joined Markel as executive underwriter for general liability. In her new role, she will collaborate with general liability head James Murray to drive sustainable growth. Percival will also focus on identifying new opportunities for profitable expansion and maintaining high service standards for brokers and their clients.
