Beneficiary of Life Insurance but have no communication w/deceased family

My gf recently had a lifelong friend passaway who had left her as one of the beneficiaries of his life insurance policy

Unfortunately, she is no on talking terms with his family & so haven't been able to find out pretty much any info in relation to the policy

I've been trying to research how to navigate this & it's feeling like without being able to talk to their family members we'll be having some hoops to jump through..

To search the online life insurance database (to see what company it was through), it looks like we'd need his SSN?

Also we were going to try to order a Death Certificate but it looks like we'd need an "official document" from his life insurance company before we can request? The alternative was a notarized permission form from his family but I don't see that as happening

Does anyone have any advice on how we might navigate this?

Edit: I saw too we might be able to get a Death Certificate from the funeral home but his family has barred her from attending / won't tell us where it is located
