Costly medication auto-refilled in between coverage periods – need advice

My partner needs specialty medication that out-of-pocket costs thousands of dollars. She just left a job and her health insurance ended on 9/30.

The pharmacy she goes through for this medication has her enrolled in an auto-refill. They processed an order on 10/8 which went through despite her not being insured and is out for delivery. There weren't any flags about her being uninsured…guess they just processed it again. She called the pharmacy to try and cancel but since it’s out for delivery there aren’t many options. They told her they’re seeing $0 patient responsibility but there’s a chance once it’s filled with insurance she may be on the hook for the full price of the medication. The pharmacy basically told her her best option is to wait for the delivery driver and refuse delivery. They said she could maybe return the medication but they may refuse that.

Does anyone have any advice for handling this type of situation? Paying full price out-of-pocket would be extreme here. Should she enroll in COBRA to continue her previous insurance for this specific instance? Should she call her previous health insurance provider, tell them what’s going on and hope that they make an exception here?

Note she just started a new job and is in the process of getting her new health insurance up and running…this just happened in a weird middle period.
