How can someone with terminal cancer get divorced and still have access to healthcare?

I have a friend in her early 40s with terminal cancer. She has four young kids and has mostly been a stay at home mom but was planning to get a divorce before she was diagnosed. She has not been married to her military husband long enough to maintain Tricare benefits after a divorce, and obviously access to healthcare is critical for her.

Initially we thought she’d have a year or maybe two, but she’s on a treatment now that’s working really well and it’s been 3 years since her diagnosis, though we have no idea how long it will be effective or if any other treatments will be effective in the future.

Is there any option for her to get a divorce but still have access to good healthcare? I’ve heard that hospitals will write off medical debt when someone dies, but would she even be able to access the care she would need? Tricare has been great with covering treatments and travel expenses, and of course a pharma company covers care related to being in a clinical trial. It would be amazing for her to be able to focus on her health and her kids and not have to be tied to her emotionally abusive husband, but it feels like she’s in an impossible situation.
