Maserati GranTurismos Are Running Out Of Gas Because The Fuel Gauge Doesn't Work

Maserati will never beat the allegations that cars built in Italy have some very strange faults. Now, the recall bug is coming for the GranTurismo and GranCabrio because of an issue with the fuel level display in the sports cars’ instrument cluster.

Maserati GranTurismo Comes in Gas and EV Models

A recall notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the body control module software in the Maserati twins may show the wrong fuel level. It doesn’t take a genius to realize that is not ideal, and apparently it can show that there is still gas in the tank even when it’s bone dry. NHTSA says this can lead to an unexpected engine stall that could result in a crash, which isn’t good.

The recall covers just 524 vehicles: 454 GranTurismos and 70 GranCabrios. The recall only impacts cars built between November 20, 2022, and July 4, 2024. Shockingly, none of them are the electric Folgore models. Wild, I know.

Listen, I cannot prove it, but over the summer I had a 2024 GranTurismo on loan, and its gas gauge was definitely a bit… off. I just chalked it up to the car being a tired fleet vehicle, but perhaps this was the issue. Who knows?

Anyway, Maserati first got a claim related to the issue on July 28 of 2023. Apparently, the instrument panel showed the car had a quarter of a tank, but it was indeed empty. That’s when Maserati opened an internal investigation, according to NHTSA. For about a year starting in August 2023, Maserati Engineering and Manufacturing was looking into the issue to figure out what was causing it, and in July of 2024, it was certain the problem stemmed from a BCM software issue.

As of September, Maserati is aware of four customer assistance records, four warranty claims and two field reports that were potentially related to the issue. Luckily, there haven’t been any injuries or accidents related to the fault. To fix the issue, Maserati dealers will reflash the BCM software to prevent the wrong fuel level from showing up in the gauge cluster. Owner notification letters should arrive on October 24, and owners can contact Maserati customer service at 1-877-696-2737.
