Moving states next week w/no coverage, is Marketplace insurance worth it? Stressing over best option.

In August I lost my employer health coverage because I quit. I quit to prepare to move out of state + I make some money through contract work. The money really varies but this month I got $1,500. However, it has been a rough year for me work wise so my estimated yearly income is $16,000.

I applied for marketplace excited to get the Advanced Tax Credit and get a plan. I was on Medicaid earlier this year and since I have variable income + I am moving, I felt state coverage was not the best. I just wanted to elect a simple or catastrophic plan but I do not qualify due to income. I can purchase out of pocket for about $300/mo. However, I have read that these plans are state specific. I will be driving 12 hours through other states and was hoping for something to cover me in case something happens. I also have a DR appointment this week (October).

What would you do? I feel that once I am moved into my new state, I can elect coverage through medicaid or marketplace to start November 1. I am hoping to find work quickly and not deal with this. My “Special Enrollment Period” is good through the end of October, so I will be able to elect.

It’s just such a hefty price for what seems like a week of potential coverage. For September I did not have coverage. Maybe it is better to pay out of pocket? Maybe I am mistaken and marketplace would cover me if I got in a wreck out of state…? I would not be updating my address until after my move.
