AXIS Capital Holdings has chosen Sara Mitchell (pictured left) to succeed Mark Gregory (pictured right) as head of global markets.

In its announcement, the specialty underwriter said Gregory is retiring in March 2025 after a distinguished five-decade career in the insurance industry, including 15 years with AXIS.

Previously divisional president of Chubb’s Continental Europe and MENA (Middle East and North Africa) operations, Mitchell will begin her transition on November 25, 2024, as a strategic advisor to Gregory. She will officially step into her new role on January 1, 2025, reporting to AXIS president and chief executive Vince Tizzio while based in London.

Commenting on the appointment, Tizzio said: “In Sara, we have found an exceptional leader to succeed Mark. We are excited about transitioning AXIS into a new chapter, building on the strong foundation that is already in place for our global markets division.

“Sara brings deep specialty P&C (property and casualty) knowledge and an expansive international pedigree with experience managing multi-billion-dollar businesses. She is a proven leader with an established track record for success, who shares our values.”

Mitchell’s credentials include 13 years with Chubb, as well as time spent in managerial roles at RSA and Allianz.

Meanwhile, Tizzio took the opportunity to thank the outgoing global markets head. “We are grateful to Mark for his tremendous leadership and years of service to AXIS,” he stated. “He has played a crucial role in helping elevate AXIS as a global specialty leader.

“Under his guidance, we achieved a number of important milestones, including the establishment of the AXIS Managing Agency at Lloyd’s with Mark serving as its first CEO, launch of AXIS Energy Transition Syndicate 2050, effective integration of Novae into AXIS, and establishment of AXIS as a top 10 player at Lloyd’s by capacity, with recognition as an outperforming syndicate.”

Gregory, whose career began at Sedgwick Group in 1980, joined AXIS in 2010 as CEO of the international division. Prior to AXIS, he spent 15 years at Marsh. The industry veteran has served on the boards of the International Underwriting Association and Lloyd’s Market Association.
