Changing jobs mid-recovery
Hey all, question for those with health insurance insight or somebody who has been through something similar.
Background: I am currently recovery from major surgery, with a 2nd surgery scheduled for the near future to fix complications from the first one. The recovery timeline is about a year, and I am currently fully covered by my health insurance through my employer and have hit my maximum in network out of pocket max for the year.
I am looking at potentially changing jobs before the end of the year, and my concern is that I have been told once I change jobs/plans/providers my leg will be marked as a “pre-existing condition” and no longer be covered. I am going to ensure the second surgery is complete (and successful) before potentially changing jobs, but for the next year I will still have lots of follow up appointments, X-rays, ct scans, physical therapy, etc and there is no way I would be able to afford any of it out of pocket.
Couple questions:
Am I stuck at my current job until this is all complete, or is there a way to ensure my new provider/plan still covers my leg through the end of my treatment?
Any specific questions to ask a new employer during interviews to ensure my coverage would continue and not be marked as pre-existing?
Would my out of pocket maximum reset before the end of the year essentially costing me another couple thousand if I were to change jobs?
Any benefits to staying with the same provider if I change jobs? I personally really like BCBS and would like to not change from them.
At what point does my leg get marked as pre-existing? It’s full of metal and screws and while I am expected to recover 100% I imagine at some point in my life I will have issues with it again.
My top priority is getting my leg fully recovered without driving me into bankruptcy. Thanks in advance!
