Trying to recover an overpayment without success

I had cancer and thankfully am recovered but I foolishly prepaid for a surgery in Feb 2024 that the hospital didn't document under my account number. I didn't realize it until months later when I had clearly hit my family deductible and they were still trying to collect another $913. When I questioned it and noticed that my health insurance had no record of the $2,613.60 surgery prepayment, the hospital agreed they messed up and owed me money. Even so, I still have not received a check, and every time I call them to inquire they have to research it, and every time they research it they recognize they owe me and say I'll be getting a check in 15-30 days. The check never comes so I have to call them and go through this whole process again (3 times now). What do I do next? I'm at a loss. They are now saying the account is closed and I need to send my insurance proof that I made the surgery payment but I don't understand what my insurance has to do with it. They don't owe me, the hospital does.
