I thought the affordable care act said that newborns are covered under the mother’s deductible for the first 30 days of life. So coinsurance would apply to a newborns hospital stay but not an individual deductible. Does that seem correct? I have been speaking with my employer, benefit group and Aetna health insurance and they are stating the babies individual deductible starts day one of life. I have asked them for writing where it explicitly states that in the coverage policy and I am waiting for them to send that but basically we’re in a situation where I got billed five grand for my deductible as the mother and we just got a bill for five grand for the babies individual deductible separate from me. We have the exact same length of hospital. The baby required no special services or had any problems while in the hospital. This is different from when I delivered in 2021 with different insurance but we did not receive a separate bill for the baby. I’m wondering if I could maybe ask the OB to bill differently and build some sort of global procedure? That would cover the baby as well?
