Watch A 14-Year-Old Drifter Become The Youngest-Ever Driver On A Formula Drift Podium

What were you doing at age 14? Were you ogling cool cars in parking lots, or even getting your first taste of life behind the wheel? If I had to guess, you probably weren’t standing on a Formula Drift podium like 14-year-old Hiroya Minowa was last week.

Minowa took second place at Formula Drift St. Louis, after knocking three-time champion Frederic Aasbo out of competition. Only another champion, James Deane, could stop the teenager from winning the round outright in the final battle.

Minowa’s been driving for half his life, since age 7, and was drifting competitively by age 11. Now, he’s competing behind the wheel of an FR-S powered by a VR38 out of a Nissan GT-R. When I was 14, I really wanted a Scion tC. Minowa wins, I think.
The highlight reel shows Minowa’s truly spectacular battle with Deane, which proves just how much skill this teenager has. I think we’ll all be watching his career, in the years and battles to come, with great interest.
