What to do in my dual health insurance scenario?
My wife is a school teacher in california and has always had great health insurance benefits. She can cover herself, me, and the two kids with no premiums. So I’ve never used my health insurance.
But now I also got a state job (college level) that has similar health insurance perks. I too can cover myself and the entire family with no premiums. My insurance is covered through Calpers and according to the webpage, we cannot double up if my spouse is also covered through calpers. She isn’t. We have not gotten a straight answer about any restrictions her insurance has related to dual coverage yet.
My insurance has the added benefit of including $1500 a year in a health flex spending account. Cool. My wife’s insurance has the benefit of lifetime coverage for her and me (as long as she lives). Better than cool. Thing is, she needs to keep the insurance to get keep that benefit. And I need to stay on her insurance to keep the benefit as well.
Safest thing to do is to just decline my insurance and the $1500 I think. I’d hate to mess up the lifetime thing for us. Besides that, I’m not sure whether there would even be an upside to dual coverage as we have Kaiser. I suppose I could elect for non Kaiser on my end but what does that do and will it mess anything up.
Anyway, looking for advice on what to do.
