CIGNA changed my primary care provider without telling me and now I owe $800

Hi, I’ve had countless phone calls with my doctors office and Cigna and 3 3 ways calls as well.

Cigna changed my PCP without alerting me and I went to 2 doctors appointments under what I thought was my PCP. Since then I have gotten 2 separate bills totaling $789 and a debt collection agency calling me.

Cigna has tried to reach out to my doctors office to correct the claims but the office states that since my PCP was out of network and I have an HMO plan I will have to pay the total amount. I told the Cigna reps that I was never told that my PCP had changed and they just say “that’s weird.”

Should I contact my state (IL) insurance department and file a complaint? I can’t afford these bills and have no idea what to do about the debt collectors. I never would have seen these doctors if I knew my PCP had been reassigned and every phone call just runs me around in circles between the two offices that aren’t able to help me.

Thank you
