Broking giant Aon has announced the hire of Ed Thomas as its new Head of Lloyd’s Capital, with the new addition bringing experience gained in the development of the London Bridge insurance-linked securities structures specific to the Lloyd’s marketplace.

Thomas joins Aon from his most recent position working at Lloyd’s, as its Head of Member Services.

He joins Aon’s Reinsurance Solutions Capital Advisory team to lead on activities focused on capital raising and capacity-enhancing initiatives to support Lloyd’s managing agencies’ growth strategies, as well as helping them to navigate volatility and build resilience.

Notably, Thomas helped Lloyd’s in its development of insurance-linked securities (ILS) structures in his time working in the market.

He served as director to both of Lloyd’s insurance risk transformation entities, London Bridge Risk PCC Limited and London Bridge 2 PCC Limited, launched in 2021 and 2022 respectively.

His remit as Head of Lloyd’s Capital for Aon will also include supporting the creation of new syndicates and delivering risk transfer and capital optimisation programmes for those operating there.

In his most recent role as head of Member Services, he was also responsible for overseeing around £37 billion of funds at Lloyd’s.

Thomas has also developed relationships with investors and capital providers throughout his career and is a qualified accountant.

Previous roles at Lloyd’s included as its Head of Global Audit and he had previously worked at Deloitte as a Director, The Ardonagh Group in Internal Audit and Investor Relations, and began his career at Chubb in an Internal Audit role.

Rupert Moore, UK CEO of Reinsurance Solutions at Aon, commented, “Ed has had a varied career which has involved his working with many of the world’s leading capital providers and risk transfer experts. We know this experience will allow him to shape better business decisions for our clients.”

Kelly Superczynski, global head of Capital Advisory, added, “Over the past two years, Aon has excelled in bringing innovative capital solutions to clients, which have addressed the challenging market dynamics and concomitant capacity constraints. With Ed on the team, we aim to generate even more client opportunities for effective risk management and profitable growth.”

Channelling third-party capital to insurance and reinsurance-linked investment opportunities in the Lloyd’s market is a topic of focus for many investors, with ILS funds and direct institutional investors all keen to explore efficient ways to access the returns of the market.

As a result, we’ll be discussing the deployment of capital to Lloyd’s opportunities at our next ILS market conference in London on September 3rd.
