Anthem Blue Cross AD&D – Denying claim because of cause of death

Looking for suggestions from anyone with knowledge or dealt with something similar.

My mother passed away unexpectedly last year; she had Life Insurance with Anthem through her employer. We submitted her AD&D claim through her employers HR. A few weeks later we received the check in full, but about 5 days after receiving the check, we get mail from Anthem stating they were denying the claim because of her cause of death listed on death certificate as: Acute ethanol Intoxication.

As I stated, it was unexpected. The family was having a birthday party and drinking was involved. My mother was 58 and I'm 36 for context. We certainly had a lot to drink that day. We were home, in our backyard, all the family was together and we we're just having a good time. My mom went to lay down around 7pm and that was the last time we said goodnight to each other.

Do we have any chance of appealing this? – TYIA
