BCBSTX kicked wife and children off of husband’s health insurance – states they do not have sufficient evidence of proof of marriage or that the children belong to the husband.

Hello all!

This is a post on behalf of my sister.

My sister's husband's (my BIL) insurance for the last three years has tried to kick someone off of their insurance every year–either her or one of the two children. Back in March, she had talked to someone to confirm that they had a copy of their marriage certificate and the children's birth certificates. To clarify, they have been married for six years and the children are four and two. BIL has been working at the same place for seven years. They started trying to kick sister off around the same time she had the first child.

They got a letter in the mail in June notifying them that sister and both children will be removed from the insurance plan because they are not qualifying dependents. Sister tried calling the BCBSTX and they told her that they don't have the required documentation to keep them on the insurance and that they will have to wait until open enrollment to get back on insurance. Sister told them that she talked to someone in March and they told her that they had everything on file, that she sent a physical copy of everything to them, and a digital copy of everything. They said that they do not have any documentation of them talking to her in March and that she has to wait until open enrollment to try and add herself and the kids back onto the plan. When asked about the digital copies (since they have those receipts easily accessible), they were told that those aren't valid copies.

Sister suspects that they are getting kicked off because they just recently submitted claims for all three of them. Sister has to see a cardiologist for a newly diagnosed heart condition. Oldest child had a two week hospital stay in February. Youngest child is suspected of having autism and was recommended play therapy a month ago.

I think it might also be important to note that BIL is a DACA recipient. I am not sure if that affects how BCBSTX is treating this but because of his status, sister and children cannot apply for government insurance. Sister and children are both American born.

BCBSTX saying that they have to wait until open enrollment to *attempt* to get back on his insurance seems really sketchy to me. It feels like they are just trying to get them off of the insurance. This is employer sponsored insurance.
