The Ontario government has activated the Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians (DRAO) program in select areas of the Town of Kirkland Lake, Township of McGarry, and Township of Chamberlain following the deluge of up to 80 millimeters of rain in the Timiskaming District in April.

The DRAO program is designed for primary residences and their basic contents, as well as small businesses, farms, and not-for-profit organizations. It offers support for emergency expenses and the costs associated with repairing or replacing essential property that is not covered by insurance.

Additionally, low-income households may apply for assistance with sewer backup damage, which is typically not covered under the program.

“I want to thank the municipal staff, volunteers, and emergency responders who went above and beyond to support the people impacted by flooding in Timiskaming District this spring,” stated Paul Calandra, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing.

To determine eligibility and understand the next steps, individuals, small businesses, farms, and not-for-profit organizations should consult the map and program guidelines available at ontario.ca/DisasterAssistance.

They can also call 1-877-822-0116 or email [email protected] after consulting their private insurance provider.

Residents lacking adequate insurance coverage to cover essential costs have until October 15 to apply for assistance through the DRAO program.
