Double coverage for a month?
My husband just started a new job this week (well, moved from a contractor to full-time government job) and surprisingly the health insurance plan is both cheap and pretty decent. We’ve never actually been on the same insurance plan before (married only 1.5 years, no kids) and are looking forward to the cost savings.
I currently get coverage via my employer, and so we had assumed I would have to wait until the end of the year for next open enrollment to drop my current insurance and add myself to his. However, unexpectedly I’m in the late stages of accepting a new better paying job offer.
My start date would be just after the 30-day enrollment window for his benefits. So his HR is suggesting we just enroll me now and I’ll be double covered for one month.
My question is, is there anything we need to consider before doing this, outside of being charged premiums for both plans? The plan I currently have is a PPO plan, and I’d be moving to my husbands HDHP with an HSA, so I’m wondering if that would cause an issue with my husband making/receiving HSA contributions during that month I’m covered under a non-HDHP plan.
