Claim was accepted, I paid the bill, now showing as denied?

I had surgery in April. While this surgery isn't always considered medically necessary, I was assured by both the hospital and on a phone call with my insurance that it would be covered.

After the surgery, various bills started to come in for it. For each, I would check that it matched what was listed under the claims section on my insurance portal and that it had the green check mark next to it that means it had already been processed and accepted by my insurance, and then I would promptly pay it. There were a few claims from the surgery that were still under review and which I hadn't received bills for. Today I logged on and found that most of those had been denied (despite being told this was a covered condition), and somehow, two of the ones that used to have green check marks by them and that I already paid, now say "denied" and the money I paid for them is no longer showing as counting toward my deductible.

Help? Are they allowed to change the status of a claim like that, especially after I've already paid?? And if not, how do I fight it? I didn't take screenshots or anything of the claims showing as processed/accepted.
