Lamborghini Hurcan Replacement Is Powered By A Bespoke, 10,000 RPM V8 Hybrid

Lamborghini’s iconic 5.2-liter V10 engine will be no more one once the Huricán’s replacement hits production, but don’t worry because its replacement seems just as special. The new car, codenamed “Lamborghini 634” is set to debut later this year with a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged flat-plane crankshaft V8 with a hybrid motor attached. Oh, and it’ll rev all the way up to 10,000 RPM. That’ll get her done, for sure.

Before you ask, no this is not the same 4.0-liter V8 found in all sorts of other Volkswagen Group products. Lamborghini is a special lil’ boy, so it gets a special lil’ engine. Lamborghini says this engine is going to be very powerful: 789 horsepower at 9,000 RPM and 538 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 RPM. Damn. Just for reference, the most powerful Huricán ever made, the STO, had to make do with just 631 horsepower and 417 lb-ft of torque.

The Lamborghini 634’s powerplant is about a lot more than just the V8, though. The Italian automaker is paring the engine up with three electric motors, with one positioned between the engine and the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission that produces 148 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque by itself.

Lamborghini being Lamborghini, engineers made it a point to give the 634 a “unique and distinctive character” when it comes to sound. No one has heard it yet, but the automaker says the engine hits a “crescendo” at high revs in terms of volume and frequency. I’m sure it does.

The 634 is scheduled for launch sometime in 2024, and while it’s a shame the naturally aspirated V10 that has powered Lamborghinis for nearly 20 years is going away, this seems like quite a worthy replacement.
