Question about what I need to do to get a prescription medication

Hi all,

First time commenter here. I don't want to state the specific medication that I'm trying to get a prescription for because of privacy concerns, but suffice it to say this is a very commonly prescribed medication. Also, I have had a prescription for this medication before, for I think ~4 years. However, I no longer have a prescription for it because the health insurance that I was previously on that allowed me to get that prescription I am no longer on.

I recently got on a different health insurance plan and would like to resume taking this medication. However, I am not sure how to request a prescription for it. I have insurance through Anthem Blue Cross & Blue Shield. I figured I could go to my online account with that insurance company and just request it through their online database. But I'm not sure whether I need to speak with the doctor I was assigned to when I got this health insurance plan or someone else to "okay" this prescription.

Anyone know whether I need to do that and, if so, how to go about doing that? I have tried calling member services and was put on hold for an ungodly amount of time.

Thanks!
