AXIS Capital has revealed its plans to broaden the group’s range of specialty insurance offerings across North America, announcing that it is set to introduce an environmental impairment liability (EIL) insurance division in Canada. Ludwig Nagata (pictured) will spearhead the initiative, stepping in as environmental assistant vice president for Canada at AXIS.

Aimed primarily at addressing contractors’ pollution liability, pollution legal liability, and follow-form environmental business, the EIL policies are scheduled to be available in the second quarter.

Nagata joins AXIS with a wealth of experience, having spent two decades in environmental underwriting and leadership roles. His most recent tenure of 12 years was with Liberty Mutual, where he led an environmental underwriting team.

With a national focus, Nagata will carry out his remit from Toronto. He will report to Andrew Johnson, AXIS Canada’s chief underwriting officer for casualty and programs.

It was noted that the expansion will be supported by AXIS’s existing environmental team in the US.

“Launching environmental impairment liability insurance in Canada speaks to our commitment at AXIS to elevate our specialty product suite to our brokers and customers,” Johnson declared.

“Ludwig has exceptional knowledge of the EIL landscape and deep relationships in the Canadian insurance industry. In leading our new offering, he will be an essential member of our team as we strive to be our broker partners’ number one carrier in this dynamic risk environment.”
