Billed for Dental Service by a Dentist That Did Not Render Service

I’ve gone to the same dentist office and seen the same dentist (1 of 3) at the office. With my last visit my amount due was a lot more than previous visits. When I checked my EOB, I discovered the office billed my insurance for service rendered by another dentist that I had not seen.

I reached out to Aetna, my insurance provider, and they explained the dentist office had billed my service under the dentist (again one I have never seen) who recently ended his contract with them and is now an out of network provider to me.

When I contacted the billing department they explained the dentist in which I was billed for is the owner of the facility and all services are billed as such due to an “umbrella” method.

All my visits have been billed under this dentist that I have never seen and has never rendered service to me. The only reason there was a cost change was because he became an out of network provider, which then made me question the billing process.

Is this fraud? Is this common practice? Should I argue this or take a lost and move on?
