Tim Hatton, branch manager – short-tail claims at Gallager Bassett, has been named one of Insurance Business Australia’s Rising Stars for 2023.

The IB Rising Stars are young insurance professionals (age 35 years or under as of Oct. 31) who displayed passion and have achieved not only for themselves but on behalf of their clients and colleagues.

Gallagher Bassett’s rising star

Hatton, one of the Australian insurance industry’s rising stars this year, commenced his professional journey at Gallagher Bassett in June 2022, taking on the role of a motor claims consultant. Demonstrating notable progress, he assumed leadership positions within a short span.

By March 2019, Hatton led the motor team, and by August 2021, he progressed to head the property team.

In June 2022, Hatton transitioned into the role of short-tail branch manager. In this capacity, he oversees a team tasked with managing insurance claims for the vehicles and properties of the NSW government, including assets such as emergency services vehicles, schools, hospitals, and landmarks.

Moving to the other side of the world

Hatton, who is originally from Dublin, told IB that he moved to Australia after talking to a friend who had moved to Sydney. Sensing it was right, he booked a ticket, took some temporary work to fulfil visa requirements, and then landed a role at Gallagher Bassett.

“To get where I am, I moved to the other side of the world on a gut reaction. I think if you trust your instincts and what feels right and work hard, there’s ample opportunity,” he said. “I started off as a motor claims consultant on the contract for the NSW state government and everything that they essentially own or are responsible for. It was dealing with police cars, ambulances, and general agency vehicles.”

Six months later, Hatton became a team leader, even though he had no experience in a senior role. Then, two and a half years later, he climbed the career ladder. In less than a year, he had taken another step up into his current role.
