The current Ford Mustang is brand new, which means it’s just about time for the rumor mill to start weaving tales of its demise. A new report from MuscleCarsAndTrucks holds the latest theory about the S650’s fate, claiming that its thread will be cut in 2028 — but Ford disagrees.

The Mustang Mach-E Rally Revealed

The report claims to be based on information from Ford’s latest contract with the United Auto Workers, which MuscleCarsAndTrucks says calls for an end to the S650 sometime in 2028. After that, the Mustang name will move to an electrified vehicle, based on the platform that will underpin an upcoming next-generation Mach-E. From MuscleCarsAndTrucks:

Thanks to the details disclosed from the new Ford-UAW labor agreement, information has been released to the public regarding plans for vehicles along with their designated assembly plants and the latest points towards the end of production for the S650 Ford Mustang in 2028, meaning after the 2028 model year, the current Ford Mustang will bid us all farewell.

This ties in nicely with previous intel covered by MC&T, which states that the S650 Ford Mustang production would end at the beginning of 2029, paving the way for the 8th generation Mustang to start production that same year, aka the S750 Mustang. Unfortunately, that means we only have four more years until the end of the V8 within the muscle car segment truly comes to pass.

Ford, however, disagrees. In a statement sent to Jalopnik, a Ford representative said:

The Muscle Cars & Trucks report about Mustang is not accurate. Beyond this, we don’t comment on speculation about future products.

Ford’s statement is vague, not specifying whether the report is inaccurate in whole or in part. The 2028 end date could be accurate but the reporting on electrification wrong, or vice versa — we just don’t know. Right now, though, it seems Mustang enthusiasts have one primary option available to them: Enjoy the sound of that V8 as long as they can.
