COVID vaccine not covered by Medicaid?
Hi all, I'm pretty desperate for help, and maybe someone knows the answer. My kids have Medicaid in New York. It's a Fidelis plan, but pharmacy coverage is through straight Medicaid. I have been trying to get my kids the COVID vaccine (booster). All the pharmacies are telling me that NY Medicaid doesn't cover the vaccine. Not only that, but I can't even pay out of pocket, because they aren't allowed to charge Medicaid recipients out of pocket for a covid vaccine. So they are saying: (1) NYS Medicaid doesn't cover COVID vaccines (but will cover flu), and (2) Because it doesn't cover it, my children can't even get it by paying out of pocket. My pediatrician's office is baffled but doesn't give the vaccine.
I called the NYS Medicaid helpline. They claim the pharmacies must give my kids the vaccine at no cost. I told the rep they refused, and she gave me a supervisor. He agreed that my kids can get the vaccine at no charge at any CVS, Walgreens, or Rite Aid. All three chains are refusing. Medicaid helpline told me I can file a complaint against the pharmacies. Well, that's great, but right now I just want them to get the vaccine.
Any advice from anyone? Who's right – Medicaid or the pharmacies? Either way, is there any way to get them the booster?
Thanks so much.
