A Miami mom is in prison after crashing her Toyota RAV4 into her own son and hospitalizing him with non-serious injuries while allegedly attempting to hit two children who were threatening her son with a gun.

33-year-old Miami resident Quantavia Miltanise Samuel received a chilling call from her son on Monday when he was looking for his misplaced backpack and said a group of kids might attack him, one of whom had a firearm.

Samuel rushed to her son’s location near an elementary school to intervene, and upon arrival found her son in a physical altercation. She then attempted to use her vehicle as a weapon. Instead of hitting the children who were threatening her son, she accidentally hit her own son, then picked him up and put him into her car so she could continue pursuing her son’s assailants. According to Carscoops,

Now, Samuel faces multiple charges including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. She’s in Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center with a $15,000 bond according to NBC Miami.

Miami Police spokesman Michael Vega said “She wanted to hit these two kids… This is what we say all the time, if there’s a problem like this, the correct thing would have been that she call the police and then she can respond, which if we would have been there, we would have prevented this.” What happens next is up to the court to decide.

Samuel faced a unique set of challenges in this altercation, being outnumbered and potentially facing off with a firearm. While I am in no way condoning using your car as a weapon, she must have been in a panicked state when she pulled up and saw her son getting assaulted. The legal thing to do was call the police and wait for them to arrive, but Samuel chose to take matters into her own hands, with serious consequences.

Ethics are tough. Justifying attempted assault with a deadly weapon is really tough, but her son was facing an arguably similar life-or-death situation. Do I think Samuel should face consequences? Yes. Do I think she acted out of line? Yes. Do I think my mom would have done something similar to protect me? Yes, but hopefully with better aim.
