Laid off – Cobra Plan 1.2k a month for myself and a dependent

Hi everyone, I was laid off a couple of months ago and my employer has officially stopped paying for the Cobra health care match, meaning my monthly rate will go up to $1,200 a month if I dont drop coverage tomorrow 11/17/2023.

I looked around https://www.healthcare.gov/ to verify if I could still enroll for healthcare/Medicaid for the remaining month and a half of this year, and it seems I can't. Apparently, the only option for health care is to go through the private marketplace?

To be honest, I'm not familiar with how the healthcare system works here since it's vastly different from where I was raised. My dependent and I don't have any urgent health-related needs that we could see ourselves needing healthcare for, but I'd like to have something since accidents and emergencies happen.

On https://www.healthcare.gov/ it states I can enroll before December 15th to get coverage starting January 1st and I think I might risk going without health care until then but I dont know if there are any issues with doing that. I definitely need a low-cost plan since I'm currently unemployed and haven't been able to land an interview yet.

Any suggestions from a cost-saving perspective? Thank you so much!
