I'm curious if anyone has had this happen and has advice on how to fight it. I am on my husband's insurance, it's BCBSIL and is the Blue Choice PPO. We pay a lot to have a "low deductible" that is way higher than it used to be.

In May of 2023 I had a baby. In July we (husband and I) were billed over $2000 for the delivery and stay. There were a few more surprise bills after that that came a month or two later but I was happy we were finally over the hump of paying off the bill.

That is until this month, 5 months after the birth of my child and 3 months after the original bill was paid in full, we received an additional bill for $475. It was listed as an outstanding balance and made to look like we didn't finish paying off the original bill.

I called BCBSIL's customer service to see why they changed the bill after it was already paid and they told me they'd have to investigate and call me back.

I received a call today saying that it's because our policy changed so now we have to pay the $475. In what way does that make sense and how is this even legal? With all the surprise bills we've already paid close to $2500 for our baby and it's so frustrating for them to just send another bill because they can.

If I appeal this am I likely to get it dismissed or lowered? Has anyone had a similar experience?
