Hi,
I have a standard/lower deductible health plan, and I’m thinking about moving into the health savings account next year. Here is some data:
– Standard health plan: monthly premium: $306, dental: $108 (plus plan), total per month: $414, total per year: $4,972 – Deductible: $515 per person and $1030 per family
– Savings health plan (HSA): monthly premium: $113, dental: $21.34 (basic plan), total per month: $134, total per year: $1,612 – Deductible: $4,000 per person and $8,000 per family
– We are a family of four:
I am 47 yo, and I have no health issues. In 2023 I went to the dentist for an annual review and no doctor visits. I did bloodwork this year and no issues.
Wife, woman, 45 yo, no health issues. In 2023, she went to the dentist for an annual review and obgyn for an annual review.
Daughter, 8 yo, no health issues, visit to the dentist.
Son, 1 yo, no health issues, just well visits for routine vaccines
I did some math, and moving to the HSA, I would save per year $3,360 in premiums, which means I could spend all this money on doctor visits and I would break even with what I pay the standard health plan (assuming I pay pretax from the HSA).
I max out my 401(a) and 403(b). My wife doesn’t work/full time mom.
However, I feel insecure because (i) we are four in the family and (ii) in the case of a low-probability health event, I would need to spend a lot of money to meet the deductible. We have enough money saved to cover such deductible needs, just in case. However, I have not spent not even $1,000 per year on doctor visits except for the year when our son was born. We don’t plan to have more kids.
I appreciate your thoughts.
Thanks
