Julie Brown is driving growth for Mobilitas Insurance through diversification and innovation

Julie Brown

Julie Brown joined Mobilitas Insurance in 2021 and serves as the company’s executive vice president of commercial. Her more than 34 years of experience in the insurance industry have given her a deep understanding of the factors affecting business auto, motor carrier and inland marine insurance. She is one the 2023 Women in Insurance Leadership honorees.

With a focus on driving growth for the company, Brown is responsible for managing all aspects of commercial underwriting, operations, project management and distribution for Mobilitas. And under her leadership, the company has seen incredible growth.

Just as commercial transportation options have evolved, so has the coverage the company provides. In 2022, Mobilitas significantly expanded its partnership with Lyft, a ride-sharing company, increasing its commercial coverage from 11 to 23 states, insuring the company’s delivery service across 43 states, as well as providing coverage in 19 states for Lyft’s Flexdrive program.

Mobilitas also indicated that it would provide coverage for the autonomous vehicle company, Cruise, which is backed by General Motors, for its fleet of all-electric, self-driving vehicles. The program was custom-designed to manage all aspects of the claims experience for the company, particularly from a customer service perspective. Both partnerships marked important milestones for Mobilitas and highlighted its ability to provide innovative solutions for these mobility-focused firms.

As Brown leads these transformation efforts, she is prioritizing the company’s digital capabilities, which will allow Mobilitas to provide bespoke solutions with superior pricing and claims management products.

Another innovation Brown has embraced involves diversity in terms of the business relationships Mobilitas has with its various vendors. “We are committed to identifying and building relationships with certified diverse suppliers where at least 51% of the business is owned, operated and controlled by people of color, women, veterans, LGBTQ+, or people with disabilities, as well as certified small businesses that align with our business strategy,” she shares. “Through our supplier diversity program, we are actively making business decisions that expand our base of diverse suppliers.”

Brown believes working with a wide range of companies  is important because it “helps the local communities that these diverse suppliers are part of, adding new business opportunities, tax revenue and income.”

Her focus on championing a culture of inclusivity and innovation also extends to the Mobilitas workforce, where she values diverse backgrounds, interests and perspectives because she understands how a wide range of experiences and voices strengthens the company and improves everything from product development to customer service.

Within the company, Brown is a strong advocate of Employee Resource Groups which encompass employees from a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences and build a strong environment of inclusivity while focusing on important social programs like environmental stewardship.

Becoming a successful leader doesn’t happen overnight, and having a mentor or sponsor throughout a career can play a major role in one’s success. Brown understands the value of mentoring and has dedicated a great deal of time investing in women in the insurance industry, sharing her wisdom and helping to prepare them for their own leadership positions. She believes that it is particularly important to mentor women in the insurtech field “to help advance gender equality in the workplace in a traditionally male-dominated business, especially during this time of growth and change in the industry,” as evidenced by her leadership team which comprises primarily women.

“As a technology-forward company, it is incredibly important for us to have a diverse team whose collective background, expertise and ideas spark innovation and allow us to continue evolving to meet the unique demands of modern mobility,” says Brown. “I am proud to champion a culture of inclusivity at Mobilitas that supports diversity and enables collaboration and ingenuity for future growth.”
