Term or whole life for 67 & 73 year olds

I recently lost my 61 y/o mother unexpectedly who had whole life but she hadn’t hit the 2 year waiting period yet and was just 2 months shy, so all we received was 120% of the premiums she paid in.

Now, I’m concerned because both my father and my aunt are without any type of life insurance and also have no savings to cover a funeral should anything happen. My father is 67 and my aunt is 73. Neither are in particularly bad health or have any real health concerns but are up in age of course. We are just wanting to get coverage for funerals mainly, not extra cash to live off of or anything like that, although a little extra of course would not hurt. They would both need affordable premiums as they’re both on a small budget on social security.

My question is, for their ages, small budget, and mainly being concerned about funeral costs, is term life or whole life better?

I don’t have a great understanding of the differences between the two types of plans and I’m of course a little concerned about waiting periods given their advanced ages. Any info or advice on which could be better in this situation would be so appreciated.
