Discovered I may have a life insurance policy opened by my parents who are estranged from me. How do I go about withdrawing the funds without my parents being tipped off so they close it before me?
I am not sure of the ins and outs about life insurance . I am in my thirties , born to very wealthy parents . When I was in my 20s I stopped talking to my parents due to physical and emotional abuse from both of them. I have had lost of health issues for which I have had to pay medical bills for. My parents have not offered to help in any way with my medical costs despite their wealth. They have bought my brother cars, and payed for college etc. because my brother has endured their abuse and has not called them out on their behavior . It is a classic narcissistic family with my brother being the golden child/punching bag for them.
I thought I remember my parents discussing opening a life insurance policy in me and my brothers names, as they discussed many financial investments . I don’t know if they actually went through with it and bought one. Someone advised me to type in my name and social to an online life insurance policy finder to find out if my parents did in fact open a life insurance policy with my name . I could sure use some help with some of my medical bills right now .
Anyways I received an email today that I do have a life insurance policy but I’m not sure if it’s a mistake . I am preparing to call the company. However I don’t know how shady life insurance companies are, or aren’t. I would assume they could see that my parents opened the policy for me when I call if I do in fact have one. I am wondering if they could call my parents and just say something vague like “just a courtesy call to let you know that your daughter is requesting the life insurance policy funds be dispersed early to her”. Why would they do this if they could? I would assume they would rather be paid more premiums then to disperse funds early . I am then wondering if my parents , upon notice of this could decide to empty the account out of spite for me and take back the money themselves . I don’t know if a parent could decide to do this , and if so how I could prevent that from happening.
Maybe I should write the company a letter stamped and dated that I am requesting the funds be dispersed to me before my parents empty the account? My parents have a lot of financial investments and if I do have a policy they could have possibly forgotten they have it and it could be on some sort of auto payment withdrawing the premiums fees out of their bank account for years.
