Sister had a stroke at 29 and is currently incapacitated. What things do I need to take care of ASAP to support her? Employment, banking, investments, health care, etc.

As the title says, my sister had a stroke and is currently incapacitated. This happened last week so it’s all still very new. She’s in the ICU and slowly starting to regain her speech, but much of what she says at this point is incomprehensible. A recovery does seem possible, but it may take months or potentially years of rehab before she can speak, read, write, and perform many other basic functions.

My parents are focusing on her health and have already overextended themselves with 8-12 hour days at the hospital. I’d like to alleviate some of the draining administrative work so they can focus on her health and rehabilitation.

What are the most important things I need to begin looking into during the first few weeks of this process? To add some context:

– We live in the US, and my sister is not married and has no children or dependents.

– She was employed full-time and living with my parents at the time of her stroke. I have her benefits package and haven’t read anything about disability leave.

– My sister was otherwise a healthy 29-year-old and this was completely unexpected. Neither myself nor my parents have legal guardianship, and obtaining power of attorney seems impossible because it would require her to comprehend + sign a document.

– Her health insurance should cover life flight and the majority of hospital-related expenses, but I imagine she’ll still end up with a hefty bill after the dust settles. She made a modest salary (~$65K) and my parents are retired teachers (middle class).

– Unfortunately, nobody has access to her bank account, phone, laptop, or email. I’ve tried reaching out to her bank to gain access to her account, but of course, wasn’t able to without power of attorney.

All of this is extremely overwhelming and it’s difficult to find clear resources online for what needs to be taken care of. Apart from making sure she’s able to recover from this tragic injury, I want to make sure our family is doing everything we can to take her not only medically, but also financially.

Sorry mods, I’m new to reddit and not sure which flair I should use for this.
