Injury from sidewalk fall, not sure what to do

Hey there, I’m looking for some advice on a situation I find myself in. I’ll call the insurance company but I wanted to see if anyone was familiar with health insurance and could give me some insight into the right way to go about this.

In January this year I slipped and fell on the sidewalk walking into work. It was not at work it was up the road as we use public parking for employee parking. Walking on the sidewalk there’s a really steep slope for someone’s driveway that goes down for vehicles to go in. It’s not a right angle or a stop in the sidewalk, its a continuation at a sharp angle and then another one on the other side to continue.

Normally I’m aware to not slip as my state, Vermont, is very snowy and icy. But that morning a person who lived there was walking by and I said good morning. As I was saying good morning my left leg shot out from under me and I fell on my left butt cheek.

Fast forward to now I’m in horrible pain, have had several x rays, mri, I’m on pain meds, I hobble around like a peg leg and sleeping it terrible. Im also in physical therapy. I have an appointment in a few weeks for a spine doctor.

My question is that I was wondering if someone else is liable? Blue cross keeps sending me questionnaires about who is responsible for the injury but I’m not sure if someone is. The town does take time sometimes to deice and plow the sidewalks often making everyone who works in the area, about 50 people, walk in the street to get to work. The sidewalks are not in great condition in some parts either. They aren’t terrible but they are obviously old.

I’m also wondering if someone is liable would that mean I would get the money back that I’ve spent on all these tests and imaging? It’s about 6 grand currently for the year out of my pocket.

Thanks!
