Hospital refusing surgery – $40k upfront.

My dad underwent emergency surgery April for an intestinal blockage. He was left with a temporary colostomy bag ever since. He was cleared for surgery in less than 2 weeks to reattach everything. His insurance is paying about 60% of the estimated cost, but the hospital called and is requiring a $40k payment upfront to move forward with the surgery. The total cost is about $106k and is based on a 7-day hospital stay, he could be out in 1-2 days if everything goes well. He does not have $40k in liquid cash at the moment to pay for the estimated cost. He offered to pay $10k and to be put on a payment plan, but they refused. They suggested waiting until he’s on Medicare to have the procedure done, probably so they can guarantee they get paid (and jack up the prices, most likely).

Do we have any other options here? Any suggestions on what to do next? He’s had this since April and it’s a health hazard and a burden. He doesn’t want to wait a few more months to get the surgery but can’t come up with the full $40k.
