Medi-cal / Medicare and Marriage
I lost my job last October due to layoffs and ended up qualifying for MediCal.
At the time, it was a god send, I was able to continue therapy was finally able to get my heart examined. We discovered I had a rare heart condition and was able to schedule a catheter ablation surgery to fix it.
Thankfully, the surgery was scheduled right before the end of my benefits in September.
I got married in June, which was one of the best days of my life. Unfortunately, this life event has undoubtedly disqualified me from MediCal due to my wife’s employment status- she has a job, and her income is over the threshold.
Now, I’m also learning that I may be responsible for any and all medical expenses paid for by the state between my marriage and end of benefits day. (From July to September)
Unfortunately, I can’t afford my own health insurance, in my area in Los Angeles, I’d have to pay over 450 a month for coverage that will keep me in the hospital system that I have my scheduled surgery at. I’m still unemployed and my wife’s company will not pay for my coverage. We looked it up, it’s 680 dollars a month.
Was I an idiot to get married while on MediCal? Should I cancel my procedure and all my upcoming therapy appointments?
Is there anything I can do? Am I going to be in legal trouble?
I have some pretty bad anxiety issues and the thought of repaying the total uninsured cost of an ECG, stress test, multiple therapy visits and multiple cardiologist appointments AND canceling the surgery I’ve been preparing for honestly makes me want to cry. Getting this far, even with MediCal was next to impossible for me and learning that it was all for nothing is extremely disheartening. (No pun intended)
Thanks in advance to anyone who can offer some insight, this is hitting me like a train.
