Car and Driver Wins National Magazine Award for General Excellence

In its 65-plus-year history, Car and Driver has received many accolades, but this one’s a first: the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) has presented us with a 2022 National Magazine Award. The win was in the category of General Excellence–Special Interest.Editor-in-chief Tony Quiroga accepted the award, and a trophy designed by Alexander Calder, at a ceremony in New York earlier this week.

It’s awards season, and that means not only the Oscars and Grammys but, for those in magazine and digital publishing, the 2022 National Magazine Awards. Car and Driver was honored this year with an award for what the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) calls “the most prestigious honor, General Excellence.” C/D took home the trophy in the Special Interest category, the first time we have been so honored, and the soon-to-be-classic cover photo depicting testing director Dave VanderWerp flying through the air in a Ford Bronco made a memorable backdrop to EIC Quiroga’s acceptance speech.

Winners in other General Excellence categories were The Atlantic, Harper’s Bazaar, and Stranger’s Guide, while the New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Southern Living, and The Verge were among winners of other categories including Reporting and Public Interest. Here is ASME’s full list of nominees and winners for 2022.
