I received multiple bills before meeting my deductible that total less than my deductible and they’re saying I’m still responsible for the total bills.

I have a 4k deductible and some backed up medical bills that were billed before my deductible was met. I'm finally $400 off paying off my deductible, but I still have a couple small bills here and there that will definitely take care of that $400. Since they were all billed at the time I had owed about 2k in deductible, they're all pretty high. I've called insurance and my Dr and I'm still confused or in shock how it all works. Can I get the bills recalculated once I've met my deductible? Insurance said I'm still responsible for paying the amount billed at the time??? That's BS if you ask me… why would I pay thousands over my deductible? First of all, I don't have thousands to over pay which is why it's taken me so long to catch up. The hospital said the same thing, where would the excess money go? Doesn't sound right to me. I called again and another lady mentioned if I over paid my deductible I can ask for the money back. I don't trust to pay that much money and not get it back for whatever reason. Not sure what to do or how to go about this situation.
