Texas colonoscopy question

I went to see a doctor about getting a colonoscopy, which is preventative and supposed to be fully covered under BCBS. When we set the appointment, they told me they were calling in the medicine for my prep. The procedure isn't for 2 months, so I found this sort of odd, but I figured that was just how it was done.

That was yesterday, today I got a text from a pharmacy I never heard of saying the medicine was called in to them, but I needed to call them to provide further information. So I called and they told me the medicine isn't covered by insurance, but they applied a coupon that brought the price down to $88.

This doesn't sound right to me. Why wouldn't the medication be free when the procedure is supposed to be fully covered? And even if it wasn't fully covered, why would my insurance not cover something so common at all?

I feel like this is some sort of scam, even though this is a well thought of doctor in DFW. Should I call the insurance to ask about this? Or should I call the doctor and ask about a different medication? I'm not sure how to proceed, but I don't have that kind of money.
