The National Association of Benefits and Insurance Professionals has picked Jessica Brooks to succeed Janet Trautwein as its next CEO.

Brooks has been running a staffing firm she started in Pittsburgh for the past two years.

Before that, she spent nine years serving as the CEO of the Pittsburgh Business Group on Health. At PBGH, she helped Pittsburgh’s employers fight for access to data they could use to lower the cost of care.

She also started an advocacy program for patients who need help with working with care providers.

NABIP — previously known as the National Association of Health Underwriters — announced Brooks’ hiring earlier this week in New Orleans, at the NABIP annual convention.

What It Means

With Brooks as CEO, NABIP could play a bigger role in promoting health care cost transparency and efforts to make health care delivery more fair.

NABIP

NABIP was founded in 1930. It now has a staff of 30 in Washington and about 100,000 members.

The roster includes benefits consultants and other benefits professionals as well as traditional health insurance agents and brokers.

Brooks’ Background

Brooks was born in Clairton, Pennsylvania, and earned a bachelor’s degree in management from Penn State University.

Early in her career, she worked in human resources at Highmark and at Lockheed Martin. She then returned to Highmark while earning a master’s degree in public management from Carnegie Mellon.

She took charge at PBGH soon after leaving Carnegie Mellon.

She now serves on the boards of the Pittsburgh Regional Health Initiative and Adagio Health, a nonprofit health care provider.
