Dentist Claim Processed Out-of-Network

Quick question about a recent dental claim. I moved and needed a new dentist so I found one recommended by my insurance in the network directory and called to make an appointment with this dentist, Dentist A. I was confirmed for an appointment with Dentist A at the office.

Well, apparently Dentist A was sick or busy because instead, I was seen by Dentist B at the last second.

My claim just went through and it was processed as out-of-network. I found out that Dentist A is in-network but Dentist B is not.

Should I appeal with my insurance, or discuss this with the dental office? Am I SOL for the bill? I realize it’s the patient’s responsibility to verify in-network status of providers, but I had already had a cleaning by the hygienist and x-rays taken before Dentist B even arrived, so from a billing perspective the damage was already done anyways. Dentist B isn’t even mentioned on the practice website, only the two other dentists at the practice that I had confirmed were both in network.

Thoughts or similar experiences?
