John Hancock expands Vitality with ŌURA smart ring partnership

Manulife’s John Hancock is expanding Vitality, a wellness-based program that rewards points and savings to its members for healthy activities, through its new partnership with ŌURA, the company that created the Oura smart ring that provides personalized health data to its wearers. The Oura Ring will be available for purchase, with a discount, to all John Hancock Vitality customers, and paired with the Oura App, participants will receive individualized data and insights to encourage changes and activity.

“The idea behind the John Hancock Vitality Program is simple but profound: enable, empower and incentivize customers to live longer, healthier, better lives. The John Hancock Vitality Program combines life insurance with a technology-enabled program that offers education, support, incentives, and rewards for everyday activities, including exercise, nutrition, sleep, preventative screenings, and mindfulness. Our collaboration with ŌURA, the company behind the smart ring that delivers personalized health data, insights and daily guidance aligns with our innovative approach to customizable behavioral insurance,” says Lindsay Hanson, vice president, head of behavioral insurance, global strategy and delivery for Manulife and John Hancock in a statement to Digital Insurance. “Now, our Vitality customers can use their Oura Rings to earn Vitality Points for healthy sleep and mindfulness and can purchase an Oura Ring at a discount if they don’t already own one. This latest expansion is one more way we’re rewarding customers for the everyday choices they make towards achieving their goals and improving their long-term health.”

The partnership enables John Hancock Vitality customers who own an Oura Ring and have an active Oura Membership to connect to the Vitality program and earn rewards for practicing healthy mindfulness activities. The Oura Ring detects over 30 different types of activities, like specific exercises, provides audio sessions for meditation or sleep and guidance on healthy habits and decision-making.

The smart ring provides participants with personalized sleep and health insights through its sensor technology, and continuously monitors an individual’s biometrics, including the user’s heart rate, physical activity levels, training frequency, body temperature and sleep patterns.

“At ŌURA, it’s our belief that people need and deserve personalized health information and solutions. No two people are the same, and it’s this understanding that makes Oura Ring such an incredible tool; it provides information that is unique to each individual,” said Dorothy Kilroy, CCO, ŌURA, in a news release statement. “Life insurers are in a unique position because their relationship with their customers can span an entire lifetime — which means there is a significant opportunity for positive impact over time. We believe that by partnering with John Hancock, we will help many more individuals understand and improve their health.”
