Had a QLE (had a baby!) and want to get off my work insurance and onto Medi-Cal, but takes longer than 30 days for them to approve?! Now what?

So, my wife (29) and I (37) are on my work’s health insurance (United Healthcare PPO) – we live in Southern California (90620). I work 40 hours a week and make $26/hour. My insurance currently takes out about $700/month from my paycheck. We just had a baby in early April. We get 30 days of coverage after the baby was born for him, but to add him to my work insurance will be an additional $250 or so. It’s all getting too expensive and with my wife no longer working, we decided to apply for Medi-Cal.

I applied through Covered California a few days after we had the baby. I had some issues with uploading documents, but looked like we only qualified for Medi-Cal and not Covered California (that’s fine). The next week I found out we needed to apply on MyBenefitsCalWin website… so I applied again. A few days later I called and they said that website was shutting down and we needed to apply on BenefitsCal. So I applied a third time.

I finally got through to our case worker who said we have a new case worker, but I haven’t been able to get a hold of the new person… The first person said it takes 30 days for our application to go through and they’re counting it from the third time we applied.

The problem we’re now facing is we only have a week left to get off of my work insurance. We don’t want to be without insurance (especially with a newborn and a wife who just gave birth), and we aren’t sure if we’re even going to qualify for Medi-Cal. But it’s getting very difficult to afford my work’s insurance.

Is there anything we can do? Appreciate any advice.
